#getnzwriting

It has been super fantastic to be part of #getnzwriting over the last few weeks.  Exciting to know that we are part of the 96,000 poems that have been written across NZ!  Our postcard poems are all packaged up ready to be sent to our 'buddy class' in Auckland - we can't wait to get a package back... we wonder where it will come from!  Such a unique way to share our learning with others.

We have had lots of wonderful word talk, learnt about anagrams, dove deeper into adjectives, nouns and verbs and had to think carefully about secrets within the 'tin'.

Camp Kaitawa 2019

Last week our the Year 6's headed off to Camp Kaitawa at Lake Waikaremoana for camp.  It was a fantastic week as you can tell from these slides!

Battleship Challenge!

Today we were a very small class due to lots of our learners heading off to the Weetbix Tryathlon.

Koka Terri and Koka Ngaire decided that for our Maths Strand workshop on Position, that we would have a game of battleships!

They made up 2 grids in each classroom space of 8x8 squares.  We then drew another grid on the whiteboard so that we could track our successful hits.

We learned that the x axis goes across the bottom ('walking along the hall') before going up the y axis ('walking up the stairs').
Moana 3 thought that they were going to lose because Moana 2 had scored lots of hits... but then it was down to the wire.  Hazel made the correct tie breaker call.  Moana 3 won!

Digital Technologies Unplugged!

So, we've all heard of Digital Technologies... but what about when we they go 'Unplugged'?!

Today in Koka Ngaire's L4 Maths Strand group - we did exactly that!




Our goal: to rescue Derek
Why: to learn about coding (writing sequential instructions) and position
How? we had a bot, a programmer and a tester.
The bot: listens to and follows instructions exactly.  Does not say anything
The programmer: writes the instructions.  Can not say anything while the instructions are being given.
The tester: takes the instructions and gives them to the bot.  Checks for 'bugs' in the programme.
We thought we were pretty good at giving instructions.... UNTIL we had to give them to the tester!!  We then found out that one little 'bug' can stop the whole programme from running.

However, after lots of 'fixes'.... Derek was definitely rescued!

We are excited to be back at school ready for another awesome year of learning!  This year we have 55 learners - half of whom were learners in MLH last year.

International Shared Feast!!!

Wow - what a way to finish our Term 4 Culture Club inquiry!
On Friday 7 December MLH held an international shared lunch which also meant we presented information about our chosen countries, bought the national dish of that country along AND dressed up in national costumes!

We had nearly 80 people in the hall - many whanau and friends came to participate... calling it the best feast ever!

We had to find out these things about our chosen countries
- the meaning of the flag and national anthem
-a famous person
- a landmark
- the national dish
- the national dress
and any other interesting information we found out.

We had some double ups of countries, however, we presented on 27 different countries!!

Awesome Animal Mosaic Art!

Wow - check out this amazing art from our Year 5s!

Firstly:
- we created graffiti art on A3 size paper using crayon and pastel
- then we did a wash of dye over the top

Then:
- we ripped the paper up!!!!!!
- we put it all in a pile in the middle to SHARE

Then:
- we created our animals fur/feathers by placing similar colours together and arranging them until we were happy with what we saw
- we used pva glue to make sure it stuck well

After that:
- we researched our chosen animals eye
- we discovered that eyes are not just one colour!
- we had lots of fun recreating the eyes using pastel
- we learnt that the white spot that makes the eye POP is actually a reflection

We are so proud of our work!!!
