Moana 2 buddied up with Room 6 and did a 100m squared beach clean up, then sorted the rubbish into type! Pretty shocking the amount of rubbish that was collected in a small area...
The whole school went down to the beach for lunch and walked back along the beach to school doing a beach clean-up as we went.

Half of our group cleaned out, sorted and reorganised the kids PE shed. We were pretty happy with the outcome - now we just have to make some signs and get some issuing and returning systems in place to keep our new look shed super tidy!

We think we will have some more cool Actions Speak Louder than Words projects up our sleeve for the rest of the term.
Moana 2
First, we had to measure a 100m square area and mark it out. This was our first challenge and it took a little while to mark out our area for collection. When we first glanced at our 100m square, we couldn't see any obvious rubbish, but when we investigated more closely, we soon discovered the hidden mess on our beach. After just over an hour of scouring, we had collected more than we estimated.
When we got back to school we sorted and weighed each category of rubbish. Would you believe that we picked up 187.997kg of waste that did NOT belong on our beautiful beach?
Although the category with the largest amount of waste was plastic, the weight of all of the rubbish combined was astonishing!
We have started trying to create an infographic of our findings and hope to share them with you soon.

ReplyDeleteMy name is Sonny Boy and I am at Tautoro School. I saw on Google Earth that your school is right next to the beach. I see you have a pool too. Our school is in the country, we are not next to the beach but we have a pool and a big field. We are learning and writing about plastic and how bad it is in our environment. It is good to see you cleaning up the beach. You should check out my school on Google Earth.

I think it is so cool yous care about our enviroment! my class has been doing heaps of research and thinking of ways to do our part in looking after our country. Thank yous for the great idea but sadly for us we dont have a beach at our doorstep but we do have great waterfalls :)

ReplyDeleteMy name is Marta, I go to Tautoro School. We are doing a similar inquiry were we design machines that could clean the sea. I Like that you cleaned up your beautiful beach by picking up the rubbish there. I cant believe you picked up 187.997kg AMAZING and sad at the same time. We are researching about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Do you know what that is? There are 5 Geyer's in our oceans that are collecting so much rubbish and plastics. We're calling it the most deadliest predator in the ocean at the moment.

I really like how you thought of going to go and pick up all of the plastics.
We really do have an issue where plastics are killing our Sea life
and it is coming into our food chain.Like a small fish eats plastic that contains toxic and chemicals.Then that fish gets eaten by jelly fish then the jelly fish get eaten by tuna and that tuna gets eaten by us.So that means we are eating the toxic and chemicals that was in the small fish. but anyways that's all for Today so Blog you later... do good
